Wishing everyone the best, and thank you to Andy for setting this up. This is merely a trial post so please do not feel obliged to comment, but any feedback would be appreciated. The following poem is one that I read out on the final night at Moniack Mhor (wonderful night that).
Cheers and all the best.
Addressing the Methodist
Methodists need not apply,
theirs is to condemn all sin.
Theirs is to abstain and sigh
when, drunkenly, we amplify
our raging Dionysian hymn.
Methodists need not apply
if pleading me to testify
"God fofgive me of my gin."
Theirs is to abstain and sigh,
forgoing God, but God knows why
they have no drinking songs to sing;
Methodists need not apply.
Jesus wept - their Christ is dry.
Wine is not now His to bring,
He is to abstain and sigh.
For Christ's sake let us sanctify
our filling vessels to the brim;
Methodists do not apply,
yours is to abstain and sigh.

Nice one - it's good to experiment with form. Very Wendy Cope, which isn't such a bad thing!
ReplyDeleteGood to see some of the ones we heard printed out - my memory for the words tends to be fragmentary, despite it being such a memorable evening. I love some of the lines here - especially the 'raging Dionysian hymn'.

'Very, Wendy Cope'? Andy, please, you spoil us with these comparisons. She's great.
ReplyDeleteChris - I know what you mean about that evening; I'd really like to read your Ode to a Wheelie Bin was it?
Cheers
